Hiking along the Chilliwack river, North Cascades

 

The arrival of our friends from the Netherlands: Marije and Daniel
De aankomst van Marije en Daniel in Vancouver.

 

The beginning of the hike, the first 4 km were on the road (which was closed for traffic). Karen, in the middle, joined us for one day and was so friendly to pick us up after our 5 day hike (Thanks Karen!).
Hier beginnen we net met wandelen. Het begin van de route is een beetje saai, omdat het over de weg is. Karen, hier in het midden, liep de eerste dag met ons mee en was zo vriendelijk om ons weer op te pikken aan het einde van onze 5-daagse wandeling.

 

All the forest here is still primary forest: beautiful!
Hier zijn we in het primaire woud; het bos is heel erg open, met vooral varens en bessenstruiken als onderbegroeing, en natuurlijk de reusachtige bomen. Werkelijk schitterend!

 

Here we see a huge tree that recently has fallen down; because the path and the forest are not maintained we saw many fallen trees along the trail.
De natuur gaat gewoon zijn gang hier: overal omgevallen bomen waar weer nieuwe bomen op groeien, en ook, zoals hier, zeer recent omgevallen/versplinterde bomen.

 

Here are Marije and Marian on one of the weirder log crossings. This was one of the parts where the path was completely gone, so this was probably not the original crossing...As you can see we had really great weather!
Hier steken Marije en Marian over omgevallen bomen een watertje over. Het oorspronkelijke pad was volledig verdwenen, dus volgden we in dit stuk gewoon de rivier. Op deze foto is ook goed te zien dat we echt geweldig weer hadden.

A cute chipmunk (not in focus, but this is the only picture we got of the chipmunk).
Een schattig grondeekhoorntje (jammer genoeg niet helemaal scherp, maar het is onze enige foto van de grondeekhoorn).

This is the highest point of the hike: the Whatcom Pass.
Hier is het hoogste punt van de wandeling: de Whatcom Pass.

 

We are not sure what kind of frog this is, but we think it's the Pacific Treefrog (Pseudacris regilla).
We vermoeden dat dit kikkertje een Pacifische Boomkikker is (Pseudacris regilla).

Beautiful flowers (we are still figuring out which species...).
Bloemetjes, we weten alleen nog steeds niet welke soort...

 

Here is another frog, a bit uglier than the previous one, I must say. We think it's again a Pacific Treefrog (Pseudacris regilla)
Nog een kikker, wel wat lelijker dan de vorige. We denken dat het weer een Pacifische Boomkikker is (Pseudacris regilla).

 

A very pretty flower, called Red Columbine (Aquilegia formosa).
Een heel erg mooie bloem, genaamd Rode Columbine (Aquilegia formosa).

 

To our surprise living in Canada: the Rufous hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus).
Tot onze verassing komen hier kolibries voor: dit is de Rufous kolibrie (Selasphorus rufus).

 

Fireweed (Epibolium angustifolium).
Wilgenroosje (Epibolium angustifolium).

 

The Tiger Lily (Lilium columbianum).
De Tijgerlelie (Lilium columbianum).

 

The Large Round-leaved Orchid or Round-leaved Rein-Orchid (Platanthera orbiculata), which can almost only be found in old-growth forest.
Deze hele mooie orchidee komt bijna alleen maar voor in het oerwoud.
